Hi, here I decided to give you a
little trivia about the 50's and 60's. Just
exactly what was the reality of a families living
standards. Ok we'll start with the price of a
home.
"1950's"
An average house
cost $14,500.
A new car--$1,700.
A gallon of
milk--$.82
A loaf of bread--$.14
A gallon of gas--$.20
A US postage
stamp--$.03
Now that all sounds
wonderful but remember the average annual salary
was only
$3,216.00.
"1960's"
That
same house now
cost you--$30,000.
That car is--$2,275.00
That same gallon of milk--$1.04
That sandwich bread now is--$.20
That
gallon of gas is--$.25
That letter will
now cost
you--$.04
The salary for us average Joe's
has gone up to
$5,199.00.
At about this time the chances of being able to
buy your dream house are getting a little slimmer
unless both the husband and wife hit the job
force. Was that the begining of our family
downfall? Two bread winners in the house and
children shipped off to baby sitters. I think the
70's was just about the time parents lost control
and the kids began having power over us. The name
of that power was "guilt trip". So we bought them
more stuff and because of that we had to keep
working. Do you see a pattern begining to
develope here?
Oh well, enough of Linda's
theories and on to more remembering good
stuff.
During those two decades i was
just a young pup and who cared about that stuff
anyway. School, making friends, playing and then
later dating were the only things on my
mind.
In the fifties and early sixties we
worried about having the new toys like
the "HULA
HOOP", JACKS, and looking
though our
VIEWMASTER.
The girls were always better at the hula
hoop thing. The guys just didn't seem to have the
right hip movement.
The next three fun things
i'll show you were more for the guys except the
comic books we shared. Us girls devoured the
Archie Comic books. We always wondered what
Veronica would be up to. The guys were into
monster comics. Remember when 3-D magazines came
out and we used to fight over the glasses to read
them?
I can remember watching my brother
playing
marbles with the guys. STEELIES and
CATSEYES were
some of the names they gave them. He was always
coming home with some new ones he had won.
The guys also began their driving careers with
the
SCOOTERS & WAGONS.
Sometimes if I was nice (this meant doing one of
his chores) my
brother would let me try it out.
Remember
these things?

Remember some of the "CANDIES" of the
times? Chocolate Babies, Dots, Jaw Breakers,
Jujubees, Wax Lips and Bottles, Penny Candy
Strips, Sky Bars, Mary Janes, Marshmello Ice
Cream Cones, Frizzies (those round tablets you
dropped in water for a fruit flavored drink).
There are many more but i can't remember them
right now.
Remember the fire drills, we all loved them because it meant a nice break for us. How about when we were in grade school and we had air raid drills. This was back in the days of a very cold war and some people were even building underground shelters in case the atom bomb was launched at us. Here is a televised version of what we were supposed to do in case those sirens went off.
Is the bomb coming????
On to page 2 of
things
remembered.
