As we reached our teen years we began
developing a new language along with our bodies. You know that was the time our hormones started kicking in. Words like DOO WOP,
COOL CATS, GREASERS, HEP, MOTORHEADS, HIPPIES,
LOVE, PEACE, YA DIG IT, HOT RODS, HEY DUDE AND
FAR OUT were now being used. The syle of
clothes began to change. Us gals wore tight
sweaters, poddle skirts became popular along
with bobbie socks, saddle shoes and the scarf
around our necks or in our hair. Page boy hair
styles and pony tails were the thing. If we were
going "Steady" (pre-engagement ring) we
wore the guys ring around our necks on a long
chain so everyone could see. If our boyfriends
happened to be "Jocks" we would wear their
lettered jackets in school (even if it was hot)
We mustn't forget those itchy crinolines under
our skirts.(hated those).

The guys began wearing white tee's with
the sleeves rolled up (outside of school they
would have a pack of cigarettes tucked in there.)
Their hair style was longer then a crew (unless you
were a Jock) and greased up and slicked back. On
top though they always made a swirl or curl. They
also wore leather jackets and blue jeans. My
parents didn't approve of these guys (dad said
stay away trouble comes with being with them.)
Even then parents were not always
right. The guys wore Penny Loafers, you know the ones that had a slot in the front to put a coin in.

Most of us females spent alot of time on
the phone telling each other who was with who and
who we saw at the luncheonette. We shared our
dreams on those phones and cried when those
dreams didn't pan out and did alot of giggleing
when they did. Remember the phones with the short
cords and the funny
handpieces?

Our
hangouts then were Luncheonettes, Dinners,
Bowling Allies, the local Indoor Theater and
Highway Drive-In on weekend nights. Sometimes we just would go
riding up and down main street in our boyfriends
cars, (we called it doing the DRAG). Gosh almost
forgot the Roller Skating Rink. I spent a lot of
time there roller dancing. Back then our skates
had four steel wheels on each skate.
When we
stopped in at the luncheonette we had your
typical hamburger and fries but the drinks were a
piece of art. Oh those fountain Egg Cremes,
Cherry and Chocolate Cokes and Rootbeer Floats.
Nothing like them today.

The
good majority of our time was spent in our rooms
with our good ole trusty 45's and the record
player. We would be laying on our beds day
dreaming or trying to absorb the homework
assignments. Almost every day mom would have to
say "KEEP THE MUSIC DOWN" or "I DON'T KNOW HOW
YOU CONCENTRATE WITH THAT MUSIC
GOING."

Yes those were the days of innocence fun
and years filled with stuff that fill our
memories today. I am so glad i was a child of the
50's and 60's.
Next is the "Do you remember and quiz page."

Here you can go on to see the places where I went back then and what I did right after high school.
Here you'll go back to the index.
